What is Ibiza Home Style?

Moving from a Hong Kong apartment into an Ibizan home has been a cathartic process for the soul.  Purging most of our belongings and bringing only the essentials has left for a very empty Ibizan space… but do we need all of those things? Actually Yes! The empty ‘minimalist’ space we have filled with Ikea furniture and a style that is not our own has left me feeling far from homely. So it started me pondering what is Ibiza Style? Here is my take on the most popular Ibiza home trends I have seen, albeit only an initial scratch of the surface as I haven’t been here that long yet.
First that I see is Ibizan Finca (country house). There are so many beautiful old Fincas here with their stunning natural wood ceilings and white walls, it seems to inspire a very neutral colour palette. Very Mediterranean!
The second that I see is ultra modern, usually new homes built with big white walls and open plan living between indoors and outdoors. Inside they are minimalistic with bold artwork and interesting accessories. They make a modern statement

Thirdly, there seems to be a bit of a Balinese, Thai, and Indian influences.  Creating exotic interiors to retreat into.  I hear from some of the locals that this is now ‘out’…. I take their word for it because I didn’t feel this trend much living in Asia, but I still see a lot of this furniture in the shops here.

Fourth, Moroccan, you see it in lights, carpets, colour, and other textiles. It’s freedom of colour fits well with the expression and colourful nature of the island. Here is a version of it that I quite like, a little more paired back.

Fifth is the modern hippy, with an eclectic mix of items gathered from around the world and lots of non matching this style crosses from high end modern jet setting hippies in large villas to low key hippy locals in small country homes. Seems a very good fit in the island but execution can easily go from chic to frumpy.
